2020 Changes to Hospital CoP Standards: What to Expect

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued more than 5,600 citations in its most recent deficiency reports. The new Hospital Improvement Rule is imposing major changes to your nursing policies and practices. Multiple significant updates are in the hospital nursing chapter of the Conditions of Participation (CoP) that are effective as of Nov. 29, 2019.

With all of these groundbreaking changes afoot, your hospital is at risk for serious sanctions and huge fines if you don’t stay up-to-speed. Get the expert insights and crucial information you need to stay out of hot water with the feds in this live webinar by hospital compliance guru Sue Dill Calloway, RN, MSN, JD. Learn about the final changes to the Hospital Improvement Rule, including the 18+ CMS survey memos specific to nursing, as well as critical revisions to hospital nursing CoPs.

After attending this in-depth webinar, you’ll walk away with all the essential information you need to know to weather the increased scrutiny and surveillance by surveyors – including the latest changes to plans of care, staffing, documentation, supervision, nursing leadership, verbal orders, antibiotic stewardship program requirements, restraints, IV medication administration, beyond use date (BUD), safe opioid standards, and so much more.

CMS has made many changes in the past to the nursing section, including timing of medications, standing orders, soft wrist restraints, care plans, and more. Now, CMS has issued the final worksheets on Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement (QAPI), discharge planning, and infection control – which should be on your radar screen. You’ll also learn about proposed changes on the horizon to the infection control worksheet.

This how-to session will cover:

  • The latest changes to hospital CoP standards, as well as CMS hospital worksheets and deficiency reports;
  • The final changes under the Hospital Improvement Rule to nursing and how they will alter your policies and practices;
  • Specific updates to safe injection practices, ISMP IV push guidelines, compounding, medication prep, immediate use, and labeling;
  • The final interpretive guidelines and changes;
  • Critical Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) resources on preventing Hospital Acquired Infections (HAI);
  • New Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) responsibilities and changes to CNO requirements;
  • Recent CMS memos of interest, including hospital deficiencies, Legionnaire’s, reporting to the PI system, discharge planning standards, and more; and
  • Crucial nursing compliance updates such as patient-care evaluation requirements for RNs, nursing care plans, and agency nurse requirements.
