Product Description

Demystifying Chapter 19 and 20 in the ICD-10-CM Manual to Clarify the Guidelines for Coding Injuries.

Chapter 19 in the ICD-10-CM manual is related to injuries.  Although there is a freeze on changes to ICD-10-CM, there have been some updates for 2015 that include clarification on how to assign the 7th character extension and other updates related to the assignment of external cause codes from Chapter 20. With the current implementation date of October 1, 2015, it is important to know the latest guidelines to make certain that the proper codes are assigned once they become effective.

In this audio conference, expert speaker Lynn Anderanin, CPC, CPC-I, COSC will look at Chapter 19 and 20 in the ICD-10-CM, and break down how to code injuries appropriately utilizing the updates. She will review laterality, coding by site, and how to code late effects, which are all updated for 2015.

Like the ICD-9, injuries have their own Chapter in ICD-10, but due to the expansion of specificity in this chapter, some may consider Chapter 19 to be one of the most complicated chapters in ICD-10. In ICD-9, injuries were coded by the kind of injury, and then the site of the injury.  In ICD-10, the site of injury is chosen first, and then the type of injury. Also, the majority of codes in Chapter 19 require a 7th character to specify if the patient is being seen for their initial visit, subsequent, or late effect of the injury. Laterality is also prevalent in Chapter 19. Chapter 20, the chapter of External Causes, is also used when coding injuries. For 2015, there have been several updates to clarify the guidelines for coding injuries to clarify how these codes should be assigned.
