Review the October 2016 and Other Updates Applicable to NCCI Edits

The NCCI edits happen quarterly, and if you’re not updating your coding process accordingly, you are inviting denials and lost reimbursement. Understanding NCCI edits and incorporating them into your coding process is critical to correct coding, reimbursement and reducing denials. Many coders and billers have been told they can or can't bill something without understanding the source of that restriction or the "why" behind it. Others may not understand why something is always denied, but they keep billing it anyway - creating a compliance risk.

This session by expert speaker Kim Huey, MJ, CHC, CPC, CCS-P, PCS, CPCO, takes you to the source of the NCCI information and explains its correct application - as well as the consequences of not understanding and applying the information correctly. The October 2016 changes will also be taken up for review during the session.

This session will also review additions and deletions of Bundling Edits according to October 2016 updates:

  • Addition of Bundling Edits – Acne surgery and foreign body removal to include debridement, cast application included in debridement codes, domiciliary and nursing home visits bundled into foot care codes, skin biopsy codes to include debridement, lesion removal codes to include debridement, skin grafting to include debridement, debridement included in breast codes, debridement bundled into many musculoskeletal codes and other surgical procedure codes, debridement included in vascular access codes, laparoscopic biopsy and cystourethroscopy included in many open bladder and GYN procedures with no modifier allowed.
  • Deletion of Bundling Edits – These include fluoroscopic guidance no longer bundled into endovenous ablation therapy, codes formerly bundled into debridement, breast localization codes no longer bundled into fine needle aspiration, medications/supplies no longer bundled into perfusion imaging, 97597 - debridement to no longer include skin biopsy, tendon injection, and catheter insertion
